It’s the time of the year when families and friends gather to celebrate or mourn over a defeat wearing the jersey of their favorite teams. Where the celebrated local heroes are not emerging from a blazing fire or descending from plane after a war, but a boy next door who delivered a touchdown at the end zone. An increasingly prevalent pop culture that cuts across every social class, gender, race and ethnicity. An aficionado might know the sport inside out, but does he have the grasp on the significance of football season and what it means to America?
The growing fascination on the mob style game started on early 1830′s, though played in different universities, they shared certain commonalities. The rules are simple, you advance the ball to the goal area, oft by all means. As it gained popularity, the game evolved into a violent sport. Injuries and fatalities to players, became rampant, forcing universities to ban the sport. Almost in a bleak of cessation, like a phoenix, football made its way from a brutal past into a glorious and much awaited sport event in the country.
Contrary to popular belief that this colliding sport are for the red-blooded, football is a game of strategy. What draws the public’s interest into the match is how the team put into action a laid out plan to deceive and to conquer the enemy. The long hours of body throbbing practice will be deduced for just a few seconds on a rectangular field. Only the bold and the best will emerge.
The collective effort exerted by the team to take home the coveted trophy, depicts a typical American society. The invigorated drive to succeed through hard work and perseverance and the willingness to sacrifice for a lifetime of training to improve one’s self. Passion, education, determination and faith are the summation of the American dream.
Needless to say, this athletics played a major role in shaping the minds of the youth. Aside from being a powerful tool from keeping vices to the lads at bay, football gives hope for a college education. The promise of a better direction through a scholarship is enough for a poverty stricken child to see himself stepping out from the ghettos to Wall Street.
To others, football is matter of life and death. Only those who have a clear understanding of the sport know that it is far more than that. It is the bond that fosters solidarity and unity. By working to a common goal, not only do they realize their dreams, but of their community as well.
In a country facing economic issues, the battle on the rectangular field extends a perspective, that the greatness of the state is not marked by perfection. Neither the state nor the people have the monopoly of notability. Like an injured athlete, he will not succumbed into pity, but will face the adversity with a constant will to overcome it.
Americans had embraced football as a way of life, a tradition, that is worth keeping and celebrating.
